St. Louis to Tampa, Florida

Florida!

Well the first leg of our trip is over. We made it safely to Tampa and are currently flying over Central America on our way to Panama City. While it has been a glorious month of seeing family and friends across the country, I cannot begin to describe the level of excitement I feel now that we are officially out of the country and starting our year abroad. It’s absolutely amazing that we get this opportunity and I only hope that we can live this opportunity to the fullest.

Before we get into all the posts about what I hope will be our crazy adventures abroad, I thought I would do a post finishing up our road trip.

Running Man

After leaving Oklahoma City and my sister and her adorable family, we headed to Saint Louis where we stayed in a small, historic neighborhood and had an amazing dinner, fantastic baked Brussel Sprouts, followed by a rainy, though incredibly fun trip to the Arch. While we didn’t go up, too cloudy to see anything, it was cool enough to hang out under it. I even fulfilled a weird lifelong dream and did an arch in front of the Arch. Don’t ask me where I got the idea but it was definitely fun for me.

The next day we started a series of quick stops at a bunch of friends’ houses. We got to hang with our friends Reid and Jamie and their two super sweet children in Indianapolis, Chris even got to sleep in a pretty pink bed!, see Chris’ brother Andy in his beautiful new house in Cincinnati, and then head to Charlottesville, Virginia to hang with Meg and Dave and their cute cat. We ate, drank great microbrews, and spent hours hanging out and chatting with everyone. Truly was a relaxing and beautiful couple days!

We then headed to Northern Ohio for a few days to hang with the Pattons and a bit of my family. We had some great vegetarian food, thanks Pattie!, and spent a day at the Cleveland Science Center with my best bud Mary and my nephew Nick. I couldn’t believe how big he is getting and I am a bit worried then when we get back next year he may be taller than me! We also caught up with my cousin, Brittany, my Dad’s family, and a friend Brian. It was really nice to be back in Ohio and to show Chris a bit more of where I grew up. It really is a pretty and peaceful place and I definitely miss aspects of it, such as driving the Polaris with Mare!

The Little Man

Our last stop of driving was a visit to Fort Wayne, Indiana. I cannot tell you how excited I was to get out of that car for the last time!  It had been packed to the brim and I have not gelt that claustrophobic in a while. We spent a few amazing days hanging out with Chris’ family and taking care of all of our last minute chores. They even hosted a party for us so we could see the extended family, as well as Chris’ brother Ben who drove down from Purdue for just the night. Plus we got to visit with the Rowes and Ryans and spend time with their adorable children!

After what felt like way too short of a time and some really hard goodbyes, we flew down to Tampa, Florida to hang with my Mom, David, and Grandma. This was an amazing four days that included a great dolphin tour, where I got to test out my new telescope lens, an awesome Segway Tour, seriously one of the most fun things we have done, and plenty of great food and family.

It’s been a wonderful month and it is so much easier leaving know we got to see so many people. I know Chris already said this but thank you to everyone who hosted us and opened up their homes!

Bye bye, USA!

I guess if I eat enough of these, they are bound to say something profound eventually

After a month-long meandering tour of the US, we are finally ready to leave the country in the morning. Perhaps the word “ready” is a bit strong, but we’ll figure out whatever we’re missing as we go along.

The last few weeks have been extremely fun and interesting already. We worked our way across the country, coast-to-coast and up and down, visiting family and friends. It gave the effect of sampling different lives a day or two at a time. Over the last month, we got to be a newly engaged couple planning a wedding, new parents, seasoned parents, and retirees living in small mountain towns, big cities, open plains, lush forests, and the island lifestyle. It has all been great input as we are working out what we want life to look like for us when we get back in a year.

We owe a big “thank you” to all of our friends and family who gave us a place to sleep, food to eat, and tours of all of the places they call home. It was great seeing you all, and we’re glad we have you in our lives.

First stop on the tour is Panama of which I know exactly 3 things: Panama hats, Panama Jack, and Panama Canal. I expect my knowledge of the country to increase dramatically in the near future. We’ll let you know!

The Journey to Oklahoma

Written By Mindy

Well we made it. We are just about finished with the road trip portion of our trip and tomorrow we will head to our final destination, Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Since we haven’t been posting lately, been far too busy hanging with friends and family, I thought I would do a quick post of our journey through Oklahoma and then do a follow-up with the rest later this week.

After an amazing few days in Flagstaff and visiting the Grand Canyon, we headed North to Denver. What was supposed to be an easy 12 hour drive turned into an epic 16 hour escapade and we were incredibly thankful when we pulled up to my Aunt’s home. The trip started out wonderfully. There are some truly majestic landscapes in Northern New Mexico with soaring and jutting rocks, beautiful skies, and wide open spaces like you just don’t see anywhere else. We also stopped and visited the Four Corners, which turned out to be super hokey but really fun. Definitely worth a quick stop!

We then continued our journey into snow and more snow and wind. We had to drive over a few mountain passes and it was incredibly slow going and just a bit scary. My four cylinder Focus just doesn’t have the power to charge through that and we were pretty thankful there was a truck cutting a path in front of us. I also was not the smartest cookie in the box and only had on flip-flops and a light fleece on so I was fairly cold for most of the journey. When you live in California you really do forget that the rest of the States have weather and that that weather happens in even April and May!

Finally we made it and it was amazing to be home in Denver. I really do think Denver is where Chris and I belong and every time we go back, it just reiterates it all over for me. The outdoor lifestyle, our friends and family there, and the general friendliness of the people is just what Chris and I love and it felt so good to be cocooned in it again. Chris visited our house, I was too sad, and it was great to know that it was being well taken care of by the tenant.  Hopefully, someday we will make it back to our small home and get a chance to really settle into it.

After a few blissful days we were off again for a 12 hour drive through the lovely cornfields of Kansas. While I actually like the state of Kansas and appreciate a good cornfield, hours of nothing but corn gets old and we very thankful that we had plenty of books on tape.

We arrived in Norman, Oklahoma and were pleasantly surprised to find out it is a super cute town centered around OU and that there was a ton to do. We really would have just been happy doing nothing with my sister and her family but it was great getting to take my niece to see some dinosaur bones and play in some really cool parks. Plus their house and street is adorable and we had a super fun night out on the town with my sister and brother-in-law.

A Very Fun Night

So far the trip has been everything I could have wanted and I only wished we had had weeks upon weeks to do this trip instead of such a short time. It has been wonderful seeing everyone and has made me realize just how much I am going to miss our loved ones over the next year.

The Beginning of Our Adventure

Well it’s official. We have left California and are on the road. Doesn’t quite feel real yet but it is pretty amazing to be spending a rainy/snowy Monday in front of a warm fire rather than in the office.

Yesterday we went hiking in the Grand Canyon with some friends. Neither Chris nor I had ever been there before and I couldn’t believe just how incredibly spectacular it really is. It is definitely one of those places that while you have seen thousands of photos of, you just cannot comprehend it til you’re standing there. We did a pretty intense hike in and out of the Canyon that was basically just 3 miles of stairs, definitely breathtaking in more ways than one!

Today we are going to go bum around Flagstaff a bit and then tomorrow it’s off to Denver! Well that is if we can brave Weather Storm Wanda.

A Quick Update

Written by Mindy

It is hard to believe it but we are now about 24 hours from departure. These last few months have gone by incredibly fast and I am having a really hard time grasping the fact that we are finally here. I am a bit terrified, beyond excited, and incredibly antsy. I am also a bit sad as we have had to say a lot of goodbyes and I know how we are going to miss our California friends. (Thank you to everyone who came out to celebrate with us during our going away parties!)

The last few weeks have been a bit hectic, last minute doctor and dentist appointments, packing up the apartment, getting together everything for the trip, and closing out our jobs. We had a huge garage sale last month and have been listing a lot of our bigger items on Craigslist so we are down to about two carloads of stuff, one of which we are storing with Chris’ brother. (We would be at one but Chris and I have a joint obsession with books and our collection is quite large.)

I can’t wait to be on the road. Chris finishes work tomorrow and then we are off! First stop, Flagstaff, Arizona and the Grand Canyon!

Shots

Woohoo, Chris and I finished our shot regiment today so we are pretty much all set! After a total of 9 shots for Chris and 7 for me, (Typhoid, Yellow Fever, Flu, Tetanus/Whooping Cough, Rabies and Hepatitis B for Chris), we were definitely ready for it to be done.

12 days and counting!

The Decision to Travel

This photo was taken in 2011, right around the time we decided to take our trip. I can’t believe how different Chris looks!

Written By Mindy

We probably get asked on a daily basis how we came about the idea to travel for a year and why we want to do it. It’s definitely a fair question. You’re trading a comfortable apartment (and bed!) for over-packed hostels and your family/friends for strangers. You’re also giving up your security, your job and health insurance, for a bit of the unknown.

Two years ago Chris and I attended the Adventure Travel Show here in San Jose. By happenchance we were walking by a speaker, a female travel writer who wrote The Lost Girls, who was speaking about her around the world trip. We sat down, listened, and I think instantly started dreaming. That evening one of us (no clue who) looked at the other and said what if? We immediately started planning and researching. I think at first we were just doing it for fun. It never really occurred to me that it might actually happen, that we might actually go. But a few months into the planning it hit me, and I think Chris, how much we wanted this and we started figuring out our date to leave.

It’s hard to explain exactly what it is that makes us and a lot of other people want to do long-term travel. There are definitely a lot of people who do it because they love seeing the sites or because they have some specific goal, such as visiting all seven continents or learning a foreign language. I’ve also come across many people who do it to “escape,” whether they hate their job or they ended a long-term relationship, they just want to get away from it all. Or even if they don’t hate something, they just want a break from the hum-drum of a 9-5 life.

My reasons are a bit of all of the above. I love my life but there is definitely some listlessness and a feeling of not really knowing what I want long-term. While I don’t think our trip will provide a magical cure for this, I do know that travel and especially volunteering while travelling has always provided me with new perspectives and as a result I have often changed or redirected my life for the better. This trip is going to allow us to encounter new ideas, have amazing experiences, and meet so many people who all have unique stories. All of this I really do believe will impact us. It will challenge our beliefs and the way we live our lives so that hopefully when we come back we are a little bit more of who we are supposed to be. Plus, we are going to fulfill some of our biggest dreams, living in a monastery, climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro,  working with sea turtles, and going on the honeymoon of a lifetime.

We leave in about two weeks for our road trip across the States. Saying goodbye and dealing with all the details as well as worrying about everything that can go wrong is a bit overwhelming. But underneath it is definitely a deep anticipation that after two years we are finally going and that in about a month we will be hanging out with this big guy.
